A Bachelors Degree in Education prepares you for careers in teaching, counseling, curriculum development, educational research, or education administration.  Education is one of the largest industries in the world and a career in education can take you almost anywhere you want to go in almost any course of study. 

 In its most general sense, education is the theory and practice of learning and teaching, along with its related research, administration, and support services.  Teaching is the rewarding task of helping students to develop skills, acquire knowledge, and become independent learners.  However, while many education majors go straight to teaching, the field of education provides an incredible amount of career opportunities in related services.  This includes administration, teacher assisting, library sciences, coaching, and counseling.  Educational environments are just as diverse and include preschools, daycare centers, public and private schools, colleges, universities, libraries, community centers, museums, and anywhere else that learning takes place.  This is why there are so many opportunities to pursue when it come to being an educator. 

Earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Education will provide you with a balanced combination of theory and practice with regards to teaching as well as any specific course of study you wish to pursue.  As an education major, you can focus on any age level, including preschool, K-8, high school, college, or adult education.  You can also pick an area of concentration like science, math, English, music, drama, physical education, languages, special education, or any area of study in which you are interested in teaching.  This makes the field of education almost limitless with regards to the career path that you can choose.

A degree program in education will require you take two years of general education including introductory classes in language arts processes, math, astronomy, biology, chemistry, environmental science, nutrition, economics, history, art history, information technology, music, principles of communication, and expository writing and reading.  This part of your curriculum will give you a well-rounded knowledge of many subjects, and may help you decide on a focus or discipline for your future in education.  Upper division classes will focus more on teaching and will include classes like introduction to pedagogy, foundations in education, computer applications in teaching, learning disabilities, integrative instruction, diversity and teaching, multimedia in education, diagnostic teaching, teaching methods, current research in curriculum and instruction, sociology of education, and analytical writing and reading.  Electives can be tailored to meet your specific requirements and discussed with your advisor.  You may also be required to fulfill additional requirements in order to obtain a teaching certificate.

Career Opportunities in Education
Career opportunities in the field of education are vast when you have a Bachelors Degree.  As the population grows and the need for more education increases, so does the need for teachers. Educational professionals can work as elementary and high school teachers, principles, school superintendents, college professors, and guidance counselors or in any other profession that involves teaching or teaching methods.  A teacher with a Bachelors Degree in Education can go on to get a masters or a PHD in education or another specialized field and become a department chair at a university, or part of the education department for the government.
